In both life and leadership, the stories we tell ourselves shape our reality. Often, those stories are influenced by doubt, fear, and old patterns of thinking. But what if we could shift our perspective and see things differently? What if we could lead with more clarity, confidence, and purpose by simply changing how we view ourselves and the world?
Here are 3 Keys to begin shifting your perspective today:
1- Ask a Better Question: Have you ever noticed how the questions we ask ourselves shape our reality? In challenging moments, we often fall into a pattern of asking questions such as Why am I not happier?”, “Why does this always happen to me? or “What are they going to think?” These negative questions often come from self-doubt and anxiety. Data tells us that 80-90% of our thoughts are the same every day and that most of those thoughts are negative. Why? Because 80-90% of the questions we ask ourselves daily are because we are on autopilot. By asking yourself this same negative types of questions, your perspective doesn’t change.
The quality of life is correlated to the questions you ask yourself (and the questions you ask God/Inner Wisdom). The quality of your questions creates the quality of your thoughts. The quality of thoughts defines the meaning you have given to circumstances and the emotions you experience.
When we ask empowering questions, we open the door to new possibilities. Rather than focusing on the limitations of a situation, we begin to see the potential for growth, connection, and insight. It shifts our focus from being stuck to moving forward. Ask empowering questions such as: ”What can I learn from this situation?” “How can this challenge help me grow and gain clarity? “, “What opportunities are available here that I might not be seeing?”
As leaders, especially in demanding roles, it’s easy to feel like the weight of responsibility is overwhelming. However, by reframing our internal dialogue, we can transform how we navigate those moments of stress and uncertainty.
2- Redefining the Story: Have you ever paused to reflect on the defining moments in your life? Maybe it was a career challenge, a personal setback, or even a time of celebration. Often, we believe that these events shape who we are—but the truth is, it’s not the events themselves that define us. It’s the meaning we choose to give them.
We have the power to transform how we view our experiences. The same event that might cause one person to feel defeated can inspire another to grow stronger. It’s all about perspective. We also have the ability to look at past events and recreate the meaning you give them. This empowers you to take away lessons learned from the memory of maybe a bad thing that happened but remove the emotional charge. You get to keep the soul lesson, but you don’t have to hold that memory and take that charge with you into other areas of your life.
This mindset shift is crucial, especially for women in leadership. In the fast-paced world of balancing career demands, personal responsibilities, and life’s unexpected twists, we can reclaim our sense of control and resilience by consciously redefining the stories we tell ourselves.
I can share a personal example of this. One of my sons came to me with the request to move back in with me until he completed his education. My first thoughts created anxiety and stress. I had been living on my own for several years and had adjusted to this new chapter and identity. I was fearful I would lose ground on this focus of allowing myself to be my priority. However, after I gave myself time to step back and ask myself some better questions, I realized that this could be a gift of time with my son. This mindset shift and perspective brought such a different energy! I had an awareness and created an intention that was now serving me. I was excited about this opportunity.
Next time you face a challenging situation, ask yourself: What meaning am I assigning to this? Is it serving me, or holding me back? What would I need to believe about that event that would best serve me?
You have the power to rewrite the narrative in a way that supports your growth, fulfillment, and well-being. Let’s start redefining life’s moments, one meaning at a time.
3- Reconnect with Your Purpose and Center: Often, we get stuck in routines and lose sight of the bigger “why” behind our actions. We find ourselves pulled in so many directions—balancing career demands, personal responsibilities, and the constant pressure to excel. Take a step back and reflect: Why do you lead? What impact do you want to create? What if we could tap into that deep inner well of strength, allowing us to lead from a place of wholeness and peace rather than stress and overwhelm? By shifting our perspective from external pressures to internal grounding, we can reconnect with our center. Reconnecting with your deeper purpose and center will ground you and provide clarity in moments of uncertainty rather than anxiety.
For me, my center is my faith. Faith requires trusting in a process. Shifting your mindset from fear to trust and surrender will change how you experience life. To ground myself, I have my daily practices of prayer, meditation, yoga, walks in nature, and journaling. They provide a place of calm and focus, allowing faith-body connection. It is important to take time to reconnect with your center. Trust that you are exactly where you’re meant to be, and that everything is unfolding as it should.
Remember, perspective is powerful.
How you choose to view yourself and your circumstances will shape the path you take and the success you achieve. Leadership is about continuous growth, and by shifting your mindset, you’re taking the first step toward leading with more resilience, compassion, and purpose. What perspective are you ready to shift today? Here’s to embracing new ways of thinking and becoming the best version of yourself.
